Our research

Girlguiding UK helps girls and young women make their voices heard. We do this by developing their self-confidence and self-esteem and exposing them to new skills and experiences. The views of young women shape the work we do and make us a truly girl-led organisation.

Our size and experience gives us a unique opportunity – and responsibility – to speak up about issues of direct concern to our members. Young people are too often stereotyped, criticised and denied a voice and we are committed to providing opportunities for them to be heard.

Girls Shout Out!

We have recently launched a series of research reports under the title Girls Shout Out!

The first report, launched in March 2007, represented the views of over 3,200 members of Girlguiding UK and showed the challenges girls still face.

Our next report was launched in November 2007. Conducted by Opinion Leader and with the support of beat, the leading eating disorders charity, the research explored issues of body image and self-esteem among girls aged seven to ten.

Polls and questionnaires

We are also using our website to collect the views of young women on many other issues.  These range from experiences of careers advice at school to the skills every modern girl should have. Keep an eye on the Members’ news and events  page to take part.

Over the coming months Girlguiding UK will become a hub for the views of girls and young women. We hope our ground-breaking and thought-provoking research will become a central resource for anyone concerned with the issues that relate to them.
